Obituary for Charles D. "Shunny" Nowell

Charles Drennon Nowell, 83, went to be with his Lord on October 27, 2013. He was born September 22, 1930 to John Kenneth and Pearl Proctor Nowell. A graduate of Ethel High School, he served four years in the U.S. Air Force. He married Jeanette Hollingsworth July 23, 1955. He spent most of his life and raised his family in the Berea Community. He was a longtime member of Berea Baptist Church, where he served as Deacon and taught Sunday School. He enjoyed working with the youth and leading the music in worship. Charles and Jeanette enjoyed gospel music and ministered to area churches through music with their young sons. He worked with his dad on the family farm until 1976 when he was elected as Supervisor of District 2 in Attala County. He served on the Attala County Board of Supervisors for twelve years, retiring in 1995 and moving to Kosciusko in 2003. He was a member of Parkway Baptist Church, where he was a Deacon. He served on many church committees. Charles was a lifetime member of the VFW and a member of the Exchange Club, the American Legion and many other county organizations. After his retirement in 1995, he thoroughly enjoyed playing cards with his friends and meeting at "the office"(McDonalds) for daily coffee and conversation, camping with Jeanette and their friends and making his grandchildren laugh with his unique stories and funny quotes.
He is survived by his loving and dedicated wife of 58 years, Jeanette Nowell; sons Kenny(Lynn) of Austin, AR, Jimmy( Alicia) of Canton, MS, Tommy(Cindy) of Raleigh, NC, Gary(Kathy) of Madison and Kevin(Alyson) of McKinney TX; twelve grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Hutchison of Middleton, TN; and many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, October 29 from 5-8pm at Culpepper funeral Home in Kosciusko. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 30 at 11:00am at Culpepper Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Parkway Cemetery in Kosciusko. The sons and Clyde Hill will serve as Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers are Earl Sims, Charles England, John Shaw, John Clark Love, Gerry Taylor, Billy Cook, Charles Gaston, Robert Keen and Edwin Albin. Rev. Walter Hines, Don Cook and Derrick Wilson will officiate.
Memorials may be made to the Parkway Baptist Church Building Fund, Kosciusko, MS or to the Alzheimer's Association.
