Obituary for Charles Nowell

Charles  Nowell
Charles Mabern Nowell, 85 of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma passed away quietly into the arms of his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ on Saturday, January 17 2015.
He was born on October 17, 1929, in Providence, Mississippi to Milton John and Beulah Iona Blanton Nowell. Charles grew up in Zama, Mississippi with his Mother and Father and four siblings who have all preceded him in death, Marjorie Nowell Myers, James B. Nowell, Billy Nowell, Edward (Dale) Nowell.
After graduation from Zama High School, Charles joined the United States Navy. Charles proudly served his country for twenty years and received numerous awards and medals. He attended Gunners Mate School and later transferred to ET school at Great Lakes NTC. He also attended Guided Missile School in Pomona, CA. During his career he served on numerous Naval ships, USS Corregidor, USS Boxer (Korean War), USS Mississippi (one of the last battle wagons), USS Thor (this ship the first Trans-Atlantic communications cable), and USS Yarnell (This was the US Navy’s first guided missile cruiser). He finished his service at Great Lakes NTC in charge of the first Closed Circuit Television Training Program. He was honorably discharged in 1967 as Chief Petty Officer.
In 1950, while stationed in Washington DC, Charles fell in love and married Dorothy (Dot) Hammond. Charles and Dorothy had three children Charles Michael (Kim) Nowell, Mary Lyndol Duncan and Claudia Faye (Tony) Eichelberger. Dorothy preceded him in death.
In 1994, Charles married Linda Ethridge in Houston, Texas. Linda’s children Gina Fedell, Todd Ethridge and Scott (Amy) Ethridge adopted him as “Dad” and he was a Dad to them.
Charles was active in his Christian life. He mentored and encouraged many people in his walk. He worshiped at Shartel Church of God, Moore, OK and enjoyed being a member of the Gideon Society. Serving in the men’s ministry and preparing Wednesday evening meals
Charles loved golf, bowling and fishing. He enjoyed playing and teaching golf to all ages. He met and made many dear friendships while playing the game of golf.
His favorite times of the year were always Thanksgiving and Christmas, when the family and friends would came from near and far to join in his fantastic cooking, football and family fun. His children and their spouses share many wonderful memories of the Father he had been to them. They include his children Mary Lyndol Duncan of Monroe, NC, Charles Michael Nowell (Kim) of Mobile, AL, Claudia Faye Eichelberger (Tony) of Forest, MS, Gina Fedell of Moore OK, Todd Ethridge of Dallas TX, and Scott (Amy) Ethridge of Kanas City MO.
He was Pawpaw to his 18 grandchildren, Emily Nowell, Jude Wilson (Emily), Aynica Lockhart (Lance), Chelsie Duncan, Tina Inzer (Josh), Kalyn Fuller (Bryan), Jaclyn Frank, Jarrod Frank, Candace Chance (Drew), Brandon Eichelberger (Tayler), Kayla Ethridge, Reagan Fedell, Tyler Ethridge, Sebastian Ethridge, Malachi Ethridge, Sabrina Ethridge, Brody Ethridge, Fischer Ethridge.
His 19 great-grandchildren called him Pawpaw and looked to him as their hero in life. Wesley Norwood, Olivia Nowell, Brandon Jones, Jacob Jones, Savanah Wilson, Cole Wilson, Eli Wilson, Noah Wilson, Ethan Wilson, Amber Lockhart, Zachary Lockhart, Ava Frank, Brooks Frank, Logan Chance, Hayes Eichelberger, Cooper Swindle, Wes Inzer, Anna Alice Fuller, Anslee Fuller and his 2 Great-great-grandchildren Emma Meadows, Orion Norwood.
Visitation will be at Culpepper Funeral Home from 11:00am to 2:00, Saturday, January 24 followed by a church service in the chapel and burial with Military Honors at Parkway Cemetery, Kosciusko.
