Obituary for Freddie George

Mr. Freddie George, 71, of Kosciusko, passed away Thursday, August 10, 2017.
Funeral services will be held at 11 am Monday, August 14th at Culpepper Funeral Home Chapel; with burial to follow at Parkway Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday 2 – 5 pm at the funeral home. Rev. Barry Corbett will officiate services.
Freddie was an extremely proud citizen of both Kosciusko and the State of Mississippi, and had a long history of service to his community. He served as mayor of Kosciusko from 1979-1989, where he oversaw a number of large scale economic development and tourist projects within the city. As Mayor of Kosciusko, he was also very active in the Mississippi Municipal Association, serving as a member of the executive committee. During his time as mayor, he was passionate about economic development, creating jobs for the city, as well as fostering better race relations for the citizens of Kosciusko. He also served as a Commissioner of the Municipal Energy Agency of Mississippi from 1984-1989. After retiring from these posts, he remained active in the community through service to the Industrial Development Corporation, serving as Chairman of the Board in 1993 and receiving the Kosciusko-Attala Development Corporation Lifetime of Service Award in 2014.
Freddie was also a successful restauranteur, opening Gaf’s Restaurant in 1989, which served the community for fourteen years. After retiring from the restaurant business he went on to work in several businesses in Kosciusko, most recently as the Customer Service Manager at Franks Chevrolet. He attended Ole Miss and remained a life-long fan of Ole Miss Sports. He was also well known in the Attala County golf community. He was a member of the First Baptist Church.
Freddie is survived by his wife, Vickie George; sons, Anthony George, Eric (Julie) George; daughters, Sonja (Sean) Martin, Leslie (Dallas) Culver; stepmother, Sandra George; stepbrother, C.L. Manderson; sister, Ann Cobb; stepsister, Julie Brooks; grandchildren, Jacob, Jayden, Ava Jane Martin, Colin, Shelby George, Callen Culver; several nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by father, Fred A. George; mother, Beatrice Owen Manderson; stepfather, C.L. Manderson, Sr.
Pallbearers will be C.L. Manderson, Eric George, Stephen Franks, Wayne Tharp, Terry Culpepper, Danny Ingold, Gerry Taylor, Jimmy Bell. Honorary Pallbearer Jake Adams.
Those that knew him will remember him most as a proud father and grandfather, who deeply loved all of his children and grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Diabetes Foundation of Mississippi.
