Obituary for Jo Nell McDaniel

JoNell Dowell McDaniel died at her home, surrounded by family, on Sunday, June 3rd, in New Albany, MS. She was 77.


JoNell is survived by her husband, Tommy, her daughters Pam (Michael) Brown and Melinda (Jerry) Wells, and her son, David (Emily) McDaniel. She is also survived by her six grandchildren, Wes and Shelby Brown, Haley (Andrew) Mayhan and Logan Wells, and Addy Morgan and Caroline McDaniel, and her two great grandchildren, Luke and Reid Mayhan. JoNell is preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Kate Dowell and her sister, Billie Hope Dunkley.


JoNell was born on March 24, 1941 in Kosciusko, MS. She graduated from McAdams High School and married her high school sweetheart, Tommy soon after. They would be celebrating their 58th wedding anniversary June 10th of this year.


JoNell’s greatest joy was her grandchildren. She attended all of the activities they participated in. She loved supporting her family and also enjoyed gardening, making preserves and cooking, and she especially loved Duke basketball.


JoNell was a faithful servant for her community, her family, and for the Lord. She was a lifelong Sunday school teacher, a member of WMU, and cooked for the shut ins in the McAdams community. She lived in many different places during her life, but found home at each new city through her church. JoNell lived in McAdams (McAdams Baptist Church), Winona (North Winona Baptist Church), Madison (First Baptist of Madison), and New Albany (First Baptist Church).


During her time in Winona, she worked as a secretary at Vo Tech at Winona High School. When in Madison she was a manager of the book store at Holmes Community College. After retiring, her and her husband started McDaniel Christmas Tree Farm which was open for more than 15 years.


Visitation will be at Culpepper Funeral Home in Kosciusko, MS on Monday, June 4th from 5 to 7pm. A funeral will be held on Tuesday, June 5th at 11am at McAdams Baptist Church with burial to follow at Coleman Cemetery in Kosciusko, MS.
