Born and raised on his parent’s farm in Attala County, MS near McCool, Wilbur made his career serving his country with distinction in the US Navy. He began his service on June 30th, 1950 as Airman Apprentice and retired with an Honorable Discharge on September 7th, 1970 as Chief Petty Officer (Aviation). During his career, he participated in hundreds of take-offs and landings from aircraft carriers ferrying personnel, mail, supplies, and high priority cargo to and from shore. He spent his final year in the Navy as an instructor, passing on his wisdom and experience to young Naval Officers.

After his Naval retirement, he worked briefly for the Federal Reserve Bank in Memphis, TN before returning home to Attala County where he was a Vocational Instructor with Holmes Community College for 7 years before serving as Attala County’s Veterans Service Officer for 13 years.

In 1963, Wilbur surrendered his heart and life to Jesus Christ and served Him faithfully, including 43 years as a Deacon and Sunday School teacher at McCool Baptist Church.

Wilbur loved all things outdoors, including gardening, raising cattle, hunting, and fishing. He especially enjoyed raising and hunting Champion Registered Beagles, competing with them in beagle trials across the south including the Attala Beagle Club, where he was a charter member. However, his main love was serving his Savior by working with his hands to help family and friends. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle, cousin, and friend.

Wilbur is survived by his wife Sarah Black Brunt, daughter Felicia Brunt Tadlock (Tommy), granddaughters Beth Springer Peters (Dan) and Anna Tadlock Buys (Stephen). He has five great grandchildren: Lola, Beau, and Lucy Peters along with Silas and Benaiah Buys. Also son-in-law, Rick Peters.
